Birds are starting to migrate so Fords pond should be hopping with all sorts of
spring arrivals.
Umpqua Valley Audubon’s
A Year of Birding at Ford’s Pond.
April 13, 2024 – Monthly Bird Field Trip.
Get your ducks in a row and come out birding with us!
9 am – No registration needed
“Birds begin to migrate 30-40 minutes after sunset with the greatest number in
flight 2-3 hours later. Migrating birds regularly fly up to 10,000’ above the
ground, although seasonal timing and weather conditions drastically impact
their distribution.” To see how many birds flew over Douglas County the night
before go to: https://dashboard.birdcast.info/region/US-OR-019
A special welcome to the Thrive Umpqua Community Well-Being Challenge
Participants who can count our walks as approved events now!
Meet: 9 am at Ford’s Pond parking lot -382 Church Rd, Sutherlin. From I-5 take
Exit 136, drive west on Hwy 138 and at 1 mile, turn left onto Church Rd. The
walk will be approximately 2 hours long. Participants can leave when they need
to. Water-proof shoes such as mud boots are highly recommended.
Additional Info: People new to birding are always welcome to join in, as are
families with children. Loaner binoculars are available for adults and
children. We will have local volunteer birders in attendance, but we also
encourage the group to help spot and ID birds. We walk at a slow pace, stopping
often to observe birds.
Accessibility and trail conditions: Currently the ADA accessible paved pathway
is halfway around the pond. It will be completed at some point during our year
of birding. We walk on the south side of Ford’s Pond where it is more “birdy”
but where the paved path doesn’t exist yet. The path is wide and grassy, but it
has areas of ruts that are holding water. A porta-potty is available at the
Church Rd parking lot until the ADA restrooms are completed.
