Location: Fir Grove section of Stewart Park behind the Umpqua Valley Arts
Center off of Harvard Avenue. Dates/Times: Friday evenings, September 23 &

Do you want to learn to record bird sounds for your own benefit as well as
to contribute to "citizen science"? Come join me at McMenemin's in Roseburg
at 5:30-7:30 pm for some fine pub grub and an informal
presentation/discussion on recording bird sounds with your cell phone,
transferring to your computer, quick editing and viewing, and uploading to

8:30-9:00 pm close up.
We are encouraging people to bring in bird-related books or other
literature to give away or share.
Though most people eat prior to the meeting, you’re welcome to bring
something to eat or drink for yourself and/or to share if you like. No
red, carpet-staining liquids, please.

*October 27--Hummingbirds: Jewels of the Air*
Location: Ford Room, Douglas County Museum; 1409 NE Diamond Lake Blvd,
Roseburg, OR 97470
Time: 7:00 pm
Presenters: John and Joy Taylor are Siskiyou Audubon Society members who
have a life list of 947 species world-wide. John is a graduate of Cornell
University’s Lab of Ornithology with a diploma in Bird Biology.
While John joined the San Fernando Audubon Society in 1960, both John and
Joy have been birding together for the past 37 years. Their birding travels
have taken them to Alaska, Canada, United States, Mexico, Puerto Rico,
Hawaiian islands and Egypt.
Program: There are over 240 living species of hummingbirds and we are
still discovering new ones. The only other family of birds outdoing the
hummers is the 277 strong tanagers. Hummingbirds can be found from southern
Alaska to Tierra Del Fuego and from below sea level deserts to steamy
tropical forests up to 16,000 feet in the Andes of South America.
Siskiyou Audubon members John and Joy Taylor will once again enchant
audiences with their stories of fascinating birds. This time the
hummingbirds of the Americas.
You will learn which are the favorite flowers of hummingbirds in the
tropics like Epiphytes, Bromeliads and Heliconia. Also you will learn which
are the malar stripes and the supercilium of these tiny birds.
You will see our photographs along with others of hummingbirds in Belize,
Costa Rica and the United States including Arizona, California, Colorado,
New Mexico, Oregon, Texas and Utah.
*October 29 (Saturday)--Diamond Lake Boat Trip*
This will our third year for this fun all-day cruise around the lake,
stopping at concentrations of waterfowl as well as several terrestrial
locations for restroom stops and land and marsh birding. This date was
chosen for the typical influx of large numbers of waterfowl, and before it
gets too awfully cold. Some photos from our Nov 2, 2014, trip are at

water birds, Diamond Lake has species such as Mountain Chickadee and
Clark's Nutcracker that we don't often see at lower elevations. Cost will
be $20 to $50/person for the boat trip (depending on how many people sign
up). Bring lunch, water, and appropriate clothing. We will depart Diamond
Lake Marina at 0800 Saturday morning on one of their 9-passenger "patio
boats," and arrive back there between 3 and 4 pm, depending on weather,
birds, and the decisions of participants. Once we have a list of
participants, we will consider carpooling. Limited Space, preregistration

*December 3 (Saturday)--Gulls at Stewart Park Wildlife Ponds*
Typically in early December there are small numbers of three or more
species of gulls at Stewart Park Wildlife Ponds in Roseburg. In order of
abundance these are usually California Gull, Ring-billed Gull,
Glaucous-winged Gull, Herring Gull, various hybrids, and occasionally
something else. Because people feed the ducks there, the gulls are
typically quite easy to study. Come join us for a basic introduction to how
to study and eventually identify gulls. Meet in the parking area at 10 a.m.

winter since the 1970s. It is a great time to get out and count birds with
others, whether expert or beginner, and to share stories of the day at the
