While my boys and I were working on their treehouse this morning we
observed a pair of Black-capped Chickadees removing small bits of rotted
wood from a cavity located only about 4 ft above the ground on the west
side of a roughly 24" dbh Douglas-fir snag in a mixed oak woodland. We hope
they will successfully raise young there.
Heard my first Cassin's Vireo of the year too. I believe a couple other
folks have heard/seen them earlier, though not sure if they have mentioned
it.
