It doesn't work. However, I have approached the problem in the last few
days by using the JSIOCSBTNMAP ioctl of the joydev module -- with
success.
The tool needs a bit of polishing, but I guess I can hand it to you
tomorrow evening if you want it.
The usage will be similar to
xmodmap -pointer "..."
