Canadian Researcher - International Union of Operating Engineers - based in
Ottawa
The incumbent works closely with the International Staff servicing the Canadian
region - this includes a lobbyist (based in Ottawa) as well as union reps and
organizers across the country. Knowledge of Canadian politics, the labour
movement, and a broad range of research techniques is key.
Must have strong analytical and writing skills and be a creative and strategic
thinker - skills probably obtained through a minimum of a social sciences or
humanities bachelor degree.
Experience with organizing or political campaigns an asset.
English proficiency is a must, bilingualism an asset.
Some of the duties may be:
* Monitoring and reporting on federal and provincial legislation and
proceedings
* Monitoring the media and other organizations for developments and
issues of interest.
o Issues may include pipelines and large infrastructure projects, trades
training and apprenticeships, labour mobility provisions in the TPP, temporary
foreign workers, labour issues writ large, and more.
* Analysing events and announcements (e.g. Federal Budget) and their
impact on the organization
* Communicating with internal stakeholders on developments and issues
being monitored
* Preparing, researching, and writing government submissions like
pre-budget consultation documents and letters to government ministers to lobby
on behalf of issues
* Perform strategic corporate research to support organizers in the
field using various information sources
o Information sources include: ATIP requests, land registry offices, court
decisions, corporate registries, stock holder information, old newspaper
databases, American WestLaw public records, and more
* Preparing briefing notes and backgrounders ahead of meetings
* Responding to general information and research requests
* Assisting on internal and external facing campaigns, writing updates
and campaign literature
* Liaise with external groups and maintain an IUOE presence with
external groups
* Liaise with IUOE's internal Canadian apprenticeship and training
committee (COEJATC), take minutes of meetings, assist with committee
initiatives, act as liaison between the Canadian Office and the provincial
training directors
* Proficiency with website building (Wordpress, NationBuilder) and
social media (Twitter, Facebook) an asset
* Opportunity to expand role and bring in new initiatives
* Some travel (approximately 2-3 weeks a year)
* Assist the receptionist / office manager and act as back-up when she
is not available
* Other duties as assigned by the Canadian Director
