Namibia, Africa

June 18 - August 10, 2007

Small Business Development Centre
University of Namibia, Northern Campus

2 internships available

INFORMATION SHEET

1.Overview: This is an opportunity for New College students, students in New
College courses and/or students involved in New College initiatives (e.g.,
the New College Youth Advisory Board for the Gendering Adolescent AIDS
Prevention (GAAP) Project) interested in gender and HIV/AIDS to participate
in projects through the Small Business Development Centre at the University
of Namibia, northern campus. Namibia has one of the highest incidences of
AIDS in the world. Students will be working on initiatives designed to
build capacity to fight AIDS more effectively. The internships will offer
New College students an international opportunity to contribute to a vital
social and health issue. Students will be part of an expanded internship
program, first implemented in 1999, in which U of T students from
departments and faculties across the university have been going to Namibia.

2. Travel Plans, Dates, Itineraries: The tentative dates for the 2007
program will fall between June 18 and August 10. Students should arrive in
Windhoek, Namibia Wednesday June 13 for orientation at the University of
Namibia (UNAM) and then commit to six weeks to follow-up. The formal part of
the program would conclude by August 3. Students who want to arrive earlier
or leave later for travel within Namibia and elsewhere in southern Africa
are welcome to do so, but would be responsible for their own travel
arrangements.

3. Accommodations: Student housing will be arranged by the Small Business
Development Centre of UNAM.

4. Eligibility and Course Credit: Students in the third year of their
academic program may apply. Fourth year students returning for the 07-08
academic year are also eligible. Priority will be given to students who have
a background in gender and HIV/AIDS through their course work, activism
and/or association with GAAP or other relevant HIV/AIDS organizations.
Knowledge of issues related to women in the informal economy and/or
microcredit projects is an asset, although not required. The internship can
be taken as an independent study course and will count as a full course
credit. Details of the course structure and will be developed by the course
coordinator, June Larkin, and the Namibia partners.

5. Application Procedures and Deadline: Students should submit to Dr. June
Larkin ( <mailto:jlarkin@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> jlarkin@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx) a
covering letter detailing their background relevant to the internship and
the reasons they would like to participate along with a ROSI transcript and
a resume by Wednesday, January 31, 2007.
