Yup, there were 12 episodes of Bits & Bytes and the Academy immediately followed each episode and related to and expanded on the preceding B&B episode; they're actually best viewed that way, first the B&B episode and then the related Academy.
You could either just watch the shows, or you could sign up and for a small fee receive some extra materials and participate in a learning course.
Unfortunately when we did the follow-up Bits & Bytes II a year or so later there was only money and interest for six episodes and IMO they weren't nearly as good; still interesting from a historical perspective though.
