When the images of Io’s fade and thoughts turn to another Silkmoth season,
there is still one guy left to enjoy; that being the Buck Moth. The species
has been flying at HC for a week now, November the only time expected for
their flight in Tennessee. As an adult it does not eat, only reproduce,
which limits an individual's activities to around two weeks.
Oaks are its host plants. It likes to fly through the woods and out into
open sunny areas mid-morning to mid-afternoon. Looking like a black and
white V, it speedily flies high and low. The open sunny areas next to oak
woods seem the best places to wait and look. If you see one, it will
disappear into the woods, but usually returns shortly.
Don’t delay. Their time is short.
