September 19, 2009. Kentucky Manor, 5211 Kentucky Avenue, Nashville, Davidson County, TN 360934N (36.15944) and 0865102W (-86.85055) I knew that the small reddish-yellow skipper down in the lantana at the mailbox was something different, but, green me, had no clue. So, snap the shoot and pray I did. Results, after verifying help from Julius and Steve, male Yehl Skipper! Who would have thunk it, right here at Kentucky Manor--number 39 for the season. I had thought it might be female, but Julius provided the following why male. He said, "The first tip for me is the very small size, then the presence of a very strong and clear black stigma in the dorsal photos. Your's has a nice ray, but the little oval dots seem more yellowy than white, ventrally, indicating a male." He added, "Any day that you find a Yehl in Tennessee seems like a good Butterfly day." I'll second that!! The species has two broods with a gap. Julius notes, "The fall brood in Tennessee seems to be much more findable and more brightly marked, than the ones earlier in the year." Thanks to Julius for his comments and the Yehl Skipper for gracing the Manor. Michael Lee Bierly, Nashville, Davidson County, TN
