Both Northern and Southern Broken Dash have been out in good numbers for the last few weeks.
They seem to like thistle, but their preference still seems to be the white Bush Clover (Round-Headed Bush Clover), and better still the Lespedeza virginica, the pinkish Bush Clover.
There are literally dozens of these two species in large patches of Bush Clover.  The Southerns seem to prefer to be up high on the plants and out in the open, while the Northerns can be found skulking around deep in the plant with a much slower flight pattern.
The Northern is a new addition for Polk County.  Photos taken September 2, 2010

This female NB-D is showing her simple Dorsal markings.

The Southerns are a little more numerous and have a broader range of coloration and markings.
The hindwing and forewing fringes are different colors.

Here we have a little male Southern with his stigma dash, broken.
