Overnight the butterfly fairy left a gift in my Pending Records folder at the BAMONA website--a submission of a record of Yehl Skipper for Crockett County, Tennessee, including a gorgeous photo. This record, made 6 September 2010 along a power line right-of-way on the north (Crockett County) side of the Hatchie River, became the 4750th county record for the state, lifting Team Tennessee Butterfly (Team TennButt for short) into the realm of 50 species/county. Thanks to a certain Polk County butterfly aficionado for submitting this record. I am at a loss to provide a good guess as to what number is possible to attain regarding the average number of butterflies per county in Tennessee. Is 70 spp./county possible? 80? I just can't say. Maybe what is important is for all of us to just have some fun looking for and photographing 'flies as the butterfly seasons pass and not worry too much about this particular facet of the endeavor. I've placed perhaps undue emphasis on one recently submitted record, so let me assure all readers that each of the other 4749 records had to be made in order for the 4750th record to be possible. All those other records are each equally as important as the most recent one. So a big thanks to all who have taken part in this effort to map the distribution of the butterflies of the state in as much detail as possible. Good 'flyin', Steve Stedman Cookeville (Putnam County)
