It sure is beautiful out there today! I don't expect to see many more days like
this in 2011 so I went for a short walk to see what else I could find. In
addition to more of what I've already reported on, I saw a handful each of
Buckeyes,Variegated Fritillarys and Sleepy Oranges, an Eastern Tailed-blueand
when I got back to the house, there was a Monarch on the Lantana.

A short walk proved I was wrong about the Fiery Skippers. I saw 4 in around 10
minutes of looking. There were quite a few more Pearl Crescents than I expected
to see but the real surprise was an extremely fresh American Lady.

There are still fair numbers flying in this area but as the Asters dwindle, so
do the numbers of 'flies. At 9:00 A.M. I did a quick count next to my house and
saw:

Gulf Fritillary 10  my Lantana was damaged by recent freezes and even though
there are a few healthy looking blooms, these have moved on to Henbit. The
attached pic show 4 on the Henbit.
Cloudless Sulphur  2   these are around because the Petunias are still in good
shape with lots of blooms.
Sachem  8  all look very worn
Clouded Skipper  10  these also like the Petunias
Orange Sulphur  1

When it warms up a bit more, I'm sure there will be dozens of
Checkered-Skippers on the remaining Asters along with a few other assorted
Skippers, some Buckeyes and 1 or 2 Pearl Crescents. Fiery Skippers seem to be
gone for the year.
