I noticed a Red Bellied Woodpecker out my Living room window this morning. It was about twenty-five feet up in a locust tree. In just a few moments its feeding was abruptly interrupted by a Pileated Woodpecker. The Pileated took over that particular branch and drove off the smaller bird. It caused me to wonder if both birds were attracted by the same decaying branch OR did the Pileated come to the sound of the feeding Red Bellied? A deliberate act of piracy ?
