I've heard from a few of the groups who worked the Knox County Fall Count today (28 Sept) and we've had some good finds. Chuck Nicholson already posted about the Nelson's Sharp-tailed Sparrow on Sharps Ridge. Jean Alexander's group at the UT Plant Science Farm found the second Knox County record of Brown-headed Nuthatch with 2-4 birds in the pines past the orchard. Incidently, after having the first record of this species on last year's Knoxville Chirstmas Count, there are now three known locations within the count circle. Other goodies at the UT Plant Science Farm included Peregrine Falcon, Bald Eagle, Bobolinks, Wilson's Snipe and Marsh Wrens. David Trently had 3 Philadelphia Vireos, Canada Warbler and Lincoln's Sparrow at the Forks of the River WMA. At our mid-day compilation lunch at the UT Trial Gardens, at least 17 Broad-winged Hawks were seen kettling over Cherokee Bluffs on the TN River right in downtown Knoxville. The cold front really brought in some good birds. Hope everyone to get out and see some.
