While doing a heronry survey by boat yesterday on Old Hickory Lake (Davidson and Sumner Counties), Warbling Vireos were very much in evidence; most forested islands had at least one singing. Prothonotary Warblers were also quite common on the islands. I also heard and then saw my first Baltimore Oriole and Orchard Oriole of the season. Eastern Kingbirds were abundant, with at least 20 on the day, including one travelling flock of 5 birds together. On the lake itself were a Caspian Tern, 3 female Red-breasted Mergansers, a couple of Spotted Sandpipers, and at least 5 loons, including two looking dapper in breeding plumage. As I write this, my first Yellow Warbler is singing in the yard. The Red-tails are still incubating in their nest above my carport. They seem to have gotten used to us coming and going in the driveway since we don't get screamed at very much any more. -- Chris Sloan Nashville, TN My photos: http://csloan.smugmug.com =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
