As reported earlier, the driving survey for Cerulean Warbler (CERW) that I conducted in western Putnam County on May 21, 2010, resulted in a total of 53 CERWs being counted; this total compares interestingly with the following totals on the same driving route for the last six years: 2004-47 2005-42 2006-28 2007-28 2008-36 2009-40 2010-53 Beginning in 2007, I have conducted standard PIF points counts at 50 points located the same part of Putnam County, with 38 of the points occurring along the driving route on little traveled back roads of the county (usually the roads are so narrow that the canopy cover is not broken over them). Here are CERW totals for the 50 point counts for the past four years: 2007-32 2008-20 2009-26 2010-29 It's odd that one of the years (2007) when the lowest CERW total was achieved on the driving route was also the year to produce the highest total of CERWs on the point counts. I suppose this asymmetry points to the fact that neither of these datasets is robust enough to give reliable trend data about CERWs in western Putnam county. But each method of counting shows that there are a fair number of CERWs in western Putnam County.
