Carol, They seem to be at normal numbers in Maryville (Blount County), from my experience of only a few years. I see or hear them everytime I drive by Blount Memorial Hospital in the evening. Often I have them on the main streets in town, too. On occasion I hear them from my house south of the city, too. Maybe the numbers are just down where you are? I wonder if the spraying for mosquitos has removed food, and thus reduced numbers? I personally believe that what we're doing to "combat west nile" is worse for humans than west nile. I'm certain it's worse for wildlife.
