Please excuse the late post-- Saturday, February 24 - Observed activity at heron colony on Swan Creek in Lincoln County (along Highway 64, near Boonshill-- 4.8 miles east of Giles County line, about 0.2 mile east of McAfee Creek Bridge). Saw 7 Great Blue Herons and 32 nests--not sure how many of these are active. I've been casually observing this colony for the past couple of years. This is the first time I've gotten to observe heron activity before leaf-out, which made counting the birds and nests much easier. The colony is on the south side of the highway. Between the road and the creek is a low, cultivated field, and the colony is about 400 yards or so from the road.
