[TN-Bird] dealing with fallen seeds and hulls

Hi, birders.
I'm wondering if there's an easy, inexpensive material to install in my yard 
below the bird feeders.  The hulls pile up in the grass, eventually killing it 
and turning to mush when we have rain.  The sunflower seeds, also when 
conditions are damp enough, sprout and create a miniature seedling forest 
(which my husband eventually mows down).

Has anyone come up with a solution for these problems?  One that's not too 
difficult to do ourselves?
