Sounds like a Sphinx moth. There are several different species.

Good birding,

I'm curious if anyone knows what the hovering insect in my butterfly bushes
is. It hovers like a hummer while enjoying nectar but has a moth-type
body, fat and fuzzy. (OK, so maybe the serious butterfly folks will scold
me for such a vague characterization). Dark wings. Had a funny show
this morning watching a thrasher give a blue jay a "taste of his own
medicine"-that is, pushing him/her around on the platform feeder forcing
it to leave until the thrasher finished feeding.
