There are at least two places in Shelby County ( Memphis ) where we used to bird, but you cannot bird there anymore. The first is / was a public road near Mckeller Lake in Memphis. North Rivergate Road is where we used to see Wild Turkey by the dozen, Bobwhite, Eastern meadowlarks, Red Tailed Hawks, and several times, a wildcat about the size of Lassie. The paved road leads thru a couple of factories to an open field at the end of the cove. There is a Stop Sign posted on the right side of the road, next to a Private Security Guard in his car. The guard will stop you and tell you that you cannot drive on the rest of the road anymore, because the Corporation which owns the nearby factory has "closed off" the road. This public road was paid for with tax dollars... but you cannot bird there anymore. http://topozone.com/map.asp?z=15&n=3885857&e=765775&s=50&size=l&datum=nad83&layer=DRG25 The second place is called North Lake, just north of Lakeview ( Horn Lake ). We got to this cypress ringed fishing lake from the western end of Shelby Drive. We used to drive over the railroad tracks, go up and over the levee, and then stay on the dirt road to get to the edge of the lake. Now there is a fence and a gate on the levee. Now the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency will let you in the area one time a year, escorted by a wildlife resource officer, in order to kill deer... but you cannot bird there anymore. http://topozone.com/map.asp?z=15&n=3877876.99914943&e=759857.000220082&datum=nad83 :-( Robert Fowler Shelby County =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to sign your messages with first and last name, city (town) and state abbreviation.
