[TN-Bird] Yard #184, County #200

Got my #200 for Lewis County this morning (4/27/2012) in the form of a male Northern Shoveler sitting with 8 Blue-winged Teals on our pond in western Lewis County. It speaks to the habitat here that I got Long-eared Owl and Northern Goshawk on the county AND yard lists before I got a Shoveler for either! when I first spotted it the shoveler had its head down, but a male Blue-winged teal behind it had its head up, creating an unlikely chimera... Our 1-acre pond has been surprisingly productive of birds this year; I suspect this may in part be due to the vegetation having grown up enough that it is mostly screened from view from the road now.

Otherwise the morning rounds showed no major changes to the cast of avian characters that have been around all week, other than a modest influx of Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and Yellow-rumped Warblers. The radar images showed that last night's big flight of migrants north from the gulf coast made it to southern Arkansas and north-central Alabama and Mississippi before settling down. One more flight night brings them to Tennessee. It is an interesting opportunity being able to radar-track the leading edge of one single wave of gulf migrants like this, with the trans-gulf flow having turned back on suddenly after being shut down by unfavorable winds for most of a week.
