A Summer Tanager appeared at a home on the Little River side of Topside Peninsula in South Knox County in early January. It was still there as of January 21. The adult male tanager feeds mainly on suet cakes and citrus fruit. The people e-mailed photographs to me. Does anyone know of other winter records of Summer Tanagers in Tennessee? The Birds of North America account says Summer Tanagers are "casual but regular winter occurrences along Atlantic Coast and in s. U.S." There is a winter record from as far north as s. Canada. On another note, I had a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher very thoroughly searching through the foliage and dead flower heads of a butterfly bush on January 17. It was both gleaning and hovering to find what I presume were tiny insects stirring in the warm sun or else insect eggs. A Ruby-crowned Kinglet fed in the same shrub the next day - again when the shrub was bathed in the sunlight.
