I observed a Winter Wren in a stand of cattails at my home in Hampton,
Carter Co., TN, yesterday (Sept. 28) evening. I got great looks and
have no doubts to the bird's identity, although I would have expected a
Marsh Wren or Sedge Wren based on the habitat.
In addition, the wild cherry trees continue to attract migrants,
including Scarlet Tanager, Swainson's Thrush, Eastern Phoebe, American
Robin and Cedar Waxwing. I also saw and/or heard Downy Woodpecker,
Pileated Woodpecker and Northern Flicker.
I noticed that the thrushes and the waxwings swallow a cherry whole but
the Scarlet Tanagers work the fruit to a pulp in their bill in a rather
messy process. Are they possibly getting rid of the seed before
swallowing?
Warbler numbers were down. I only saw Magnolia and Tennessee Warblers.
Ruby-throated Hummingbirds duel, quite fiercely, for first rights to
sip on the blossoms of my Pineapple Sage.
A Great Blue Heron also visited the fish pond.
Bryan Stevens,
Hampton, TN
