I called several birders in the area last night but I thought I'd also post
here to get the word out better.

Yesterday afternoon on Jan. 25th, around 4:30 pm I saw 3 adult Whooping
Cranes feeding in a corn field near Winchester, TN. I was traveling on Hwy.
50 which runs between Winchester and my home town of Lynchburg. About two
miles or so from Winchester before you get to the community of Broadview,
directly across the road from the Dripping Springs Subdivision I noticed
three large white birds in the middle of a corn field. I turned around and
went back for a better look. Using a pair of 9 power Leupold binoculars I
was able to get a good look at the birds from about 200 yards. The birds
would occasionally jump into the air and flap their wings. When they did, I
was able to see the black wing tips. They appeared to be defending their
feeding areas from each other as when they jumped into the air they would
kick with their feet. The red crest on their heads was not very obvious at
that distance but I was able to see it when the light hit it just right.

After doing a little research on the web I found Operation Migration's web
sight (http://www.operationmigration.org/Field_Journal.html) and read where
the cranes have been in the same area since early in January. They are
Cranes 209, 213 and 218. They are from the second class of birds that were
taught to migrate by following the ultra-light aircraft from Necedah
National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in central Wisconsin to a vast salt marsh at
the Chassahowitzka NWR on Florida's gulf coast

If anyone would like to see the rare birds while they are here, this would
be a good opportunity as they will likely stay until the next weather front
pushes them to other areas. If you'd like further information or directions,
I can be reached on my cell phone at: (931) 224-5920.
