At the old Blythe Ferry approach on the Dayton side of the river, I observed a Whooping Crane with the Sandhills. If you stand at the boat dock looking at the river, the bird was to the left on the right end of the island. It was easy to see the white plumage but difficult at first to be certain it wasn't the mute swan that has been hanging out in that same area. After waiting about 15 minutes it finally stepped out into the clear and was obviously a whooping crane. To make it even more certain, the mute swan then swam across the river between me and the crane. :) A lifer for me so that is an added bonus. The overall number of sandhills seems to be declining a bit and I am seeing more and more further south toward Chattanooga on Hwy 27.
