On September 25th, the First Annual White County Fall Bird Count was
conducted.  We had four teams in the field during the day, with a total of
eight birders participating.  A total of 113 species were located during the
day.  Out of that total count, several species were of particular interest:

Pied-billed Grebe - one early arrival
Virginia Rail - seen in Heritage Marsh since mid-summer
Sora - found at a pond adjacent to Heritage Marsh
Common Moorhen - adult male, extremely rare in the Upper Cumberland
Wilson's Snipe - one early arrival
Loggerhead Shrike - two on count day, several sighted throughout the county
this summer
Marsh Wren
Sedge Wren - three adults in Heritage Marsh, along with four young
Bobolink - a total of 13 seen at two different locations
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - one early arrival
Savannah - two early arrivals
17 species of Warblers

The Sedge Wrens were of particular importance, since they provide evidence
of breeding activity in Tennessee.  As a result of this count, six new
species were added to the White County Bird List (207 total to date).  Our
appreciation goes out to those who participated.

For a complete version of the White County Fall Bird Count, which includes
all totals and detailed notes, you can consult the web page set up by Steve

We have already scheduled our First Annual White County Christmas Bird Count
for Tuesday, December 21st.  Anyone interested in participating can contact
