Thursday, January 1, 2009 Lola and I visited the Grainger County side of Cherokee Dam from 3:45 to 4:45 pm to see the Western Grebe and Red-throated Loon reported by Dean Edwards. From the eastern end of the parking area, we scanned and found a Red-throated Loon in the main channel past one of the dirt islands. We also found three Common Loons, three Horned Grebes, four Pied-billed Grebes and one mature Bald Eagle. After multiple times of scanning up and down the main channel, we spotted the Western Grebe almost directly across the channel from us. It dove numerous times and finally flew eastward up the lake giving us a good view in flight. There were many birds spread across the main channel further eastward but they were well out of scope range. We also checked out the Jefferson County side at the dam overlook and saw primarily Ring-necked Ducks and Ring-billed Gulls.
