DEC. 27, 2005 Mud Island and TVA Lake Shelby Co. TN First a caution, if you visit the Mud Island parking area do not get too far away from your car. There has been a rash of car windows broken and things stolen. I know of 3 break ins in the last 2 weeks. On the River, the Peregrine Falcon still perches on one of its two favorite stumps and seems content as it has been seen every time I visit the area. The single White Pelican that has been hanging around for a few weeks was seen flying for the first time. It looks like its primaries on the right wing are growing back. There are still a lot of Ring-billed Gulls patrolling the river but nothing exciting in the Ring-bills. At TVA Lake, there is less water in view than duck backs. I found 4 bill tagged Lesser Scaup today along with 1 Goldeneye female, 1 female Green-winged Teal and 1 female Pintail. There are 17 species of waterfowl using the lake. If you want to study the various plumage's of a lot of species, this is the best place to get up close and personal with the species of your choice. I even had another mixed up duck like the cross dressing Pintail I had at Lauderdale Waterfowl Refuge a while back. I photographed a Hooded Merganser with the head of a female and the body plumage of a male. Good Birding !!! Jeff R.
