Birding was really great Friday before I headed out of town; the rain
slowed everything on Saturday and Sunday but still good birds were to be
found.
A search of 9 Western Kingbird sites revealed 4 birds, 3 in TN and 1 in AR.
Painted Buntings at Wapanocca NWR in AR and 1 at a new location at the
"Pits" photographed singing Saturday and Sunday. The one Bank Swallow on
Friday bloomed to many on President's Island and at the "Pits" on the weekend.
Six Black-bellied Whistling Ducks were seen on all 3 days at Ensley Bottoms
with a few more scattered around in MS and 14 Snowy Egrets were feeding in
one group on President's Island. At least 6 pair of Bob Whites were seen at
Ensley along with 3 active Shrike nests and lots of Savannah, White-c and
White-t Sparrows still hanging around. Indigos, Blue Grosbeaks and
Dickcissels arrived in big numbers along with scattered flocks of male
Bobolinks
plus groups of Eastern Kingbirds.

Shorebird numbers were generally down everywhere, fewer birds or just
water everywhere? The Ruff evidently was a one day wonder. Nineteen species of
Wind Birds were found with the following numbers or notable species,
Black-bellied 1 each in AR and Ensley, Golden-Plovers low numbers in breeding
garb seen in AR-TN-MS, Semipalmated Plovers - AR-TN, Killdeer with young
TN-AR-MS, Spotted Sandpipers - 11 Ensley, Solitary -everywhere there was a
puddle, Greater Yellowlegs very few scattered in AR-MS-TN, Lesser in good
numbers in TN, scattered in AR-MS, Semipalmated Sandpiper - 8 TN - 1 AR,
Western
Sandpiper - 1 Ensley, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER - FIRST OF SEASON at ENSLEY
SUNDAY, Dunlin scarce AR-TN, Stilt Sandpiper - 3 TN, Long-b Dowitcher - 8
Ensley, Wilson's Snipe getting harder to find- TN-AR-MS, 18 WILSON'S
PHALAROPE, great majority breeding plumaged females at the "Pits" Ensley. I had
 one
brilliant female feeding less than 10' away which was the best photo treat
of weekend.

Good Birding!!
