The female Common Goldeneye at the Erwin City Park Pond was still there
Saturday. Kind of strange to see this frantic diving duck in among all
the dabblers, including a large number of tilting Canada Geese, Mallards
and a pair of Gadwall. The Wood Ducks were elsewhere today.
Coming from Johnson City, take the first Erwin exit from I-26, then the
first left and pull into the last parking lot of the park. Walk up
cautiously and the Canadas will just calmly walk into the water.
Returning to Washington County I tried hiking across the Jackson Farm
for Fox Sparrow, but saw hunters toting guns, so backed out and found
the bird in the brush at the Sevier homestead Chimneys. Jackson Farm is
just off Tenn. Highway 107, turn onto Jackson Bridge road and park
beside the gate. Ruby-crowned Kinglet was displaying his ruby crown.
Back at Bear Run, Malone Hollow, Jonesborough in Washington County got
the first Purple Finch of the year at my feeders. Purple Finches appear
to winter somewhere south of Tennessee, as most of the sightings are
clustered into October and February as they pass back and forth.
White-breasted Nuthatches doing their mating calls like the Model-T
starter, and Carolina Chickadees are fee-bee-bee-baying. Can spring be
far away?
