Took an afternoon walk on the Turkey Creek Wetland greenway in west Knox County this afternoon beginning at 3 p.m. I expected the place to be rather dead at that hour but it was literally hopping with activity of the sparrow variety. I guess the White-Crowned Sparrows have set up camp here this winter as I refound several in the same general area that I found them on the Knoxville CBC January 2--along the paved path just east of the fitness station. They were in the company of dozens of other sparrows, mostly Song Sparrows but also several Swamp Sparrows and a couple of White-throated. Two nearby Hermit Thrushes were also a nice find. Then as I was standing on the pavement, looking down the chip trail that runs north just east of the creek, checking out a towhee and a swamp sparrow on the chip trail, an adult Cooper's Hawk made an unexpected landing on the ground near them. It stayed for maybe a minute but when I tried to move a bit to get an unobstructed look, the hawk flew into the trees and vanished.
