Taking an evening walk through the weedy orchard with our hound this evening (3/29/07), we saw the woodcock fly up and do her distraction display again. We walked on past to look at a wild plum that was flowering for the first time this year, then headed back. As we passed the spot near where the woodcock first popped up, Peggy gasped and I froze. There was a baby woodcock in the middle of the path practically between my feet. And another nearby. And another! And a fourth one just off the path! They were absolutely frozen, and among the most adorable wild critters I have ever seen: fluffy, striped, and with wonderful miniature long woocock bills already. They were probably about the size of a week-old chicken (other than their big noses) and just as fluffy. Peggy got control of the hound while we scooped the chicks up one by one and shoed them off the path. Once we started handling them they unfroze and began running with their little wings (already pretty well feathered) flopping and their bills pointing the way. Momma woodcock began calling to them and the whole family headed off to a more remote corner, farther from the path and closer to the creek. Excitement down on the farm! Also, the year's first White-eyed Vireo was singing this morning.
