SNO is a project anyone can do and since the number of swifts is declining, joining the count will help document the drop. You can read about the project at <http://www.concentric.net/~dwa/ page56.html>. The count is over for this year, but you could scout out a site for next year. The laundry smokestack at Shelby Farms is taken, but if you are interested, I know another good spot. Carolyn Bullock and I had participated for several years. Unfortunately, she is no longer with us.. Forrest and Barbara Priddy helped me count this year. We counted 665 Chimney Swifts diving into the smokestack at the old laundry at Shelby Farms. The number was down from previous years. I can only guess that our very dry late summer was an important cause. I urge you to find a chimney near a parking lot, take a folding chair, refreshments and your binoculars and spend about an hour or so watching and counting. It is fascinating.
