Jan. 4, 2006 Shelby Farms Shelby Co, TN St. Charles, AR I took my lunch at Shelby Farms today and on Patriot Lake came upon a mixed flock of small geese. I took quite a few photos and studied the birds closely and came up with this crazy mix: 7 - Snow, 4 - Blue, 10 - ROSS'S, 13 - CACKLING, 5 very small Lesser Canada and 29 Canvasback Ducks. There were lots of other Canada Geese on Pine Lake but this was a heck of a flock of tiny geese to shift through. One of the Ross's had a yellow neck band and after a lot of waiting, I was finally able to read the letters and have sent them off. You just never know what you are going to find at Lunch. Yesterday, Jan .3, I participated in the White River CBC at St. Charles, AR for the third year and came up with 98 species. It was one beautiful day but unfortunately they are suffering as we are with the drought. My best birds were an American Bittern, a Forster's Tern, a intermediate dark morph Harlan's Red-tail that I got a good flight shot of and a rare light morph Harlan's plus 5 species of geese. I had to leave early so I don't know what the final count was but the ducks, geese and blackbirds filled a beautiful morning sun rise and that was again well worth the trip. Anyone interested in doing this way under manned count next year, get in touch with me and we'll go. Keith "Catfish" Sutton has compiled the count for 30 years. Good Birding !!! Jeff R.
