February 14, 2005 Gibson and Crockett Counties I had a few birds of note while rambling about northwest TN on this beautiful Valentine's Day. Had a nice adult light-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK on Austin Road south of Yorkville in Gibson County. It hovered in the wind in full sunlight for several minutes showing off before flying off to the south and disappearing behind some trees. I also had a stunningly gorgeous dark-morph Red-tailed Hawk on Manley Road in Crockett County near Crockett Mills. Lapland Longspurs were seen in two places - small flocks were seen on both Lanier Road in Crockett County and on Cool Springs Road in Gibson County. I also had a single very cooperative Western Meadowlark on Siloam Road in Crockett Co. This bird perched up on a fence post after crossing the road and sat in full sunlight for several minutes. I capped off the day with a couple of nice birds this evening here at home at Mt. Orange (just outside Trenton) in Gibson Co. The first was a calling, displaying American Woodcock in a nearby field which was joined briefly by a second bird. A few minutes later my son and I heard the distinctive, hair-raising call of a Barn Owl hunting over a nearby field. A nice way to end a beautiful day. Ahh, Spring was definitely in the air today!
