A brief excursion along the walking trail at the Robertson County YMCA —it encircles a small, wooded wetland area—turned up a respectable number of species this morning. Standouts were Louisiana Waterthrush, Tree Swallow, and a Solitary Sandpiper that was made unwelcome by the resident Killdeer which eventually chased it off. Several Eastern Meadowlarks have staked out territory in a nearby field and seemed especially intent on defending their boundaries, chasing one another low across the grass. Yesterday I stopped by Shelby Bottoms on the way home and was rewarded with a Great Egret and a pair of Blue-winged Teal.
