The Snowy Owl at Spring Hill was allowing small crowd of observers to have leisurely looks at it this morning. Thanks to Bill Rogers and Damien Simbeck for making sure the word of this got out promptly! David Kirschke and I were present pre-dawn at the Cracker Barrel parking lot. The bird appeared about 6:40 a.m. perched atop a sign on the interchange; probably the same sign Bill Rogers first found it on yesterday. It spent the next several hours in the immediate vicinity of the interchange, sometimes on signs, sometimes on the grass, sometimes on the little limestone roadcuts where the GM plant truck entrance (continuation of Saturn Parkway) passes under Highway 31. The bird was still present and being watched and photographed when I left at about 9:45 a.m. Some locals indicated that the bird has been there for a while. PLEASE be EXTREMELY CAREFUL viewing this bird because of its situation in the middle of a freeway interchange! The highways are not interstates, so safe off-road parking is allowed. But they are divided 4-lanes with 55 mph speed limits. This morning the viewing was happening best by parking alongside highway 31 just south of the overpass for the entrance ramp from Saturn Parkway. The bird was seen on both sides of the road. There are safe turnarounds on highway 31 just north and just south of the intersection, so you should not need to cross the highway on foot. Good luck, and be safe!
