With hummingbird like actions, visiting our trumpet-vine hedge and our perennial sage (red) plants, then perching on a branch, the visitor initially had the appearance of a plovercrest with its long, wispy antennae (crest). However, with closer inspection it was not so quickly identified as a Snowberry Clearwing "hummingbird" moth. The Snowberry Clearwing is approximately 2 inches in length and perhaps resembles a large bumblebee more than a hummingbird but this clearwing moth looked and acted so much like a hummingbird that it took a long, second look from this experienced birder to be viewed otherwise.
