I hiked up to the fire tower atop Mt. Sterling (GSMNP) yesterday, 10/11, to see fall colors but fog/mist/low clouds and light rain obscured all the views. At least there was colorful leaf-litter and a few birds along the trail. Close to the top in an area of predominantly red spruce with driving wind and mist I had a nice mixed flock with most species listed below represented. Mt. Sterling Trail (elev. ~3800' to ~5800') 12:00 - 5:00: Black-and-white warbler - 1 f Tennessee warbler - 1-2 Blue-headed vireo - 4 Golden-crowned kinglet - 4+ Ruby-crowned kinglet - 1 (FOS) Black-capped chickadee - 3 Red-breasted nuthatch - 1 heard Dark-eyed junco - several Common Raven?? - 1 Shane Williams Knoxville, TN
