After 2 unsuccessful attempts at seeing the COMMON MERGANSERS I finally saw the male a few times between 6:45 - 7:45pm in the Greenbrier section of the GSMNP today. I first saw it flying upstream past the 2nd parking area as I got out of my vehicle then found it swimming upstream from here where the stream and road bend left and there is a small pulloff on the right. There are lots of small trees here in between the road and stream so I just used them for cover and moved slowly while observing this beauty and even saw it bob through a small section of rapids. A couple walked by and said they saw 2 ducks upstream somewhere that they thought were Mallards. I was curious so I walked up to the ranger station without seeing anything and turned back. The male merganser was seen again just downstream from the 2nd parking area around 7:45 and flew back upstream when I was trying to get a photo from my jeep. I never saw the female. I also had a close FOX SPARROW just upstream from the 2nd parking area walking and pecking around along the little ditch beside the road. A silhouetted TREE SWALLOW flew overhead and bats were zipping by me as the light faded.
