[TN-Bird] Sightings Report 13 Nov 2006 Ensley Bottoms Area

Sightings Report 13 Nov 2006 Ensley Bottoms Area, Memphis, Shelby County
 

Location:     TVA PONDS

Observation date:     11/13/06, 415-445pm

Notes:      Thousands of blackbirds (Grackles, Red Wings, and
Starlings)Massing up at sundown to roost in the reeds and the trees at the
TVA ponds. Redtails 3, were sitting on the western most power pole in the
pond, watching the roosting spectacle. Northern Harrier flew across low E to
W and disappeared into the spoil area. Flotilla of ducks is good of size in
big pond. No Scope. Mostly Lesser Scaup. Gadwells flying in at sundown. Lots
of coots also. Smaller pond had the mergansers and another smaller float of
coots and the Ruddy's. 30 minutes to sundown and the place was full of
birds.

Red-tailed Hawk     3

European Starlings, Red-winged Blackbirds, and Common Grackle Thousands
roosting in trees & reeds.            

 

Location:     TE Maxwell Lagoons

Observation date:     11/13/06, 445-505pm

Notes:      Light fading away fast as 5pm approached. Hawks are scattered
but 2-3 different ones were seen each time when I moved into each area. Grt
Bl Herons were spread out from the ponds to the levee's to the drying
fields. Too dark to tell what LBJ's were flying around. Geese were all on
top of the levee not normally driven on near the drying fields enjoying the
tall grasses. Killdeer only shore birds spotted. No Scope. Definitly two
different N Harriers flying around the bottoms. Redtails all showing various
colors/shades. One was very dark morph.
