Hello, Sunday (Mar.5), I attempted to beat the rain, with a late afternoon trip to Western Greene Co. I spotted a couple of red-tailed hawks off rt. 340, and jumped 10 wilson's snipe on the glades rd heading to the Lick Creek WMA , S. Mohawk rd. I arrived about 1645, and immediately saw two N.Harriers over the field. I then noticed a third bird that appeared brownish, with a shorted body, and no white rump. It was on the back side ofthe property looking from the S.Mohawk road, so I quickly circled around tothat side and entered by the storage barns. After I hiked in and cleared the first tree line, I saw the owl again for about a minute, but it went downin the brush ( about 3 ft hight weeds). I made my way that direction forabout 100 yards, and the owl came back up and worked himself my way. I could see from about 40 yards with my 7x35, the flat face with dark eye area's , black tipped wings, and dark wrist areas, also the back of the wingsappeared lighter, possibly a male? I stayed about thirty more minutes and saw 4 more harriers, but the owl did not appear any more after 1710. At one time I heard a "nasal bark" that could have been from the owl, but I'm convinced that this was my first Short-eared owl. I also added a cooper's hawk, and still found barn owl wash and feathers in the storage barn.
