Shorebirds were dropping in at their regular time in the morning with a half
dozen Pectoral falling in with a couple of Lesser Yellowlegs at 10:30. Least
Sandpiper numbers were over 350, Semipalmated Sandpipers up to 14 but I
could not relocate the Western from the day before. Solitary Sandpiper number
is
over 14 with Killdeer and Black-necked young everywhere and some still setting
eggs. The first hatching broods of Black-necks are now flying while others
were just struggling out of their eggs and nests.

Finally, the Spotted Sandpiper family made an appearance, on Friday I showed
Gail King a distant but bright immature Spotted and it plus its dad and
sibling were seen together Friday and Saturday. The heat waves and distance
made
for poor photos but one shows dad with one young. One of these youngsters
still retained natal plumes on the head and tip of the tail while both show
dark,
light based bills, bright mantles, vested breasts with clear belly, plus
crisply barred coverts and tertials.

After a two plus hour search, both Black-bellied Whistling Ducks were
discovered hiding in the shadows with a group of Mallards. When sleeping they
were
impossible to detect in the crowd. So much for youngsters as they appear to
be just vacationing;o(
