Hi folks, The hits just keep coming at Seven Islands Wildlife Refuge in East Knox County. Today, Sunday, June 05, 2005 was the 2nd day of the MAPS bird banding station at this location, which is a south-pointing peninsula on the French Broad River. The habitat we band in is primarily grassland and is being managed by the Seven Islands Foundation for native grasses and forbs. 3 banders, 1 band-trainee, a Knox Parks and Rec intern, 6 band-aides, and several guests were on hand as we handled 72 birds of 21 species. Including last Tuesday, we have now handled 120 birds of 22 species. This includes several species that Partners In Flight identifies as quickly declining. We caught hatch-year birds of 6 (or 7) species. I was shocked that this included Willow Flycatcher. I never would have thought this species would have had time to fledge young yet. But the birds keep teaching me. Our next tentative banding date is Sunday, June 12 at 6:20 am We caught: fledgling?
