This morning at 1:25 AM, I heard at least two screech owls calling near my house. There may have been more (a family?), and one, perhaps a young bird, was occasionally giving a shortened, higher pitched version of the whinny. Since I've been sleeping on the screen porch a lot this summer, this is the first I've heard. Typically screech owls call on their own frequently in August and September, but not often at other times. [Why was I awake then? I dreamed I had a tick crawling on my arm, but I was getting frustrated because I couldn't see it on my arm (all of the dark spots I was "seeing" were just freckles). Then I woke up, felt the tick in the dark, and dispatched it.] I decided not to punish anyone with tick remarks.
