The Savannah, TN CBC was conducted on Wednesday, December 28.  !6 participants
in 8 parties tallied 109 species, 16,019 individuals.  Highlights included 46
American White Pelicans, 1 Virginia Rail (at its usual spot at Walker Branch
wetland), 78-273 Sandhill Cranes (flocks were seen by 4 different parties, all
within 15 minutes of each other.  It was hard to tell whether it was the same
flock, moving around fairly rapidly, or different flocks.  78 was the highest
actual count by one party and will be the number reported as  the count total.
Err on the conservative side, I guess.), 1 Forster's Tern, 1 Short-eared Owl
(feeding over a grassy field edge during pre-dawn owling), 4 Merlins, 2 House
Wrens, 3 Lapland Longspurs, 3 Orange-crowned Warblers, 1 Palm Warbler, 38
Vesper Sparrows, 31 Purple Finches and 1 Pine Siskin.  We set new record high
counts with 14 species and tied two others.  We had no record low counts, but
then, we used to conduct this count with only 3-4 people in 2-3 parties.  Field
and White-throated Sparrows and Juncos were in low numbers, compared to recent
