Friday Jan 2, 2015
Duck River Unit, Humphreys Co, TN

Tons of Mallards were present with few American Wigeon, N.Pintails, Shovlers.
Had 2 Brown Creepers, 3 Winter Wrens, which for me is a lot for just few hours
birding. Best birds of the day were 7 Sandhill Cranes on the ground and close
to the road (first field on the left when you enter the bottoms).

Later on in Stewart county at the boat ramp at the Cumberland TVA Steam Plant I
saw a Great Blue Heron do something I have never seen before. Actually 2 Great
Blues were flying over the middle of the river channel when it appeared both
were going to land in the middle of the river. One pulled up and kept flying
away while the 2nd actually landed in the middle of the river and floated there
for a few seconds before taking off again and flying away. Never seen that
before! For a second I thought it might dive like I witnessed Canada Geese
doing last year for the first time in my 20+ years of birding but it didn't.
Never know what your going to see out there!

Stanley York Jr.
