It has been three months that Willie has been here in Smithville and I am still up every morning anticipating his first trip to the sugar water. He came this morning at 6:05 for that first quick taste. I was thinking what a little creature of habit Willie is and about that time the little Song sparrow that always comes to the bare bush left of the hummer feeder appeared. I thought that sparrow is there early every morning and late every afternoon. I know it is the same one because he has a patch of black feathers on his left side. A quick glance out the back window to see that the Cardinals, Juncos and White-throated sparrows were all in their usual places assured me that they were right on schedule. I heard the neighbor start his truck at 5:45 to leave for work and watched the white suburban and the little blue truck that speed down the road every morning at exactly 6:30 coming home from work. As I hurried over to the sink to make a pot of coffee so I could experience that first quick sip and saw Willie come back for the fifth time and settle down for a nice long drink, I thought , you know what, I guess we are all creatures of habit.
