Willie almost met me at the door this morning as I carried the feeder and placed it under the heat lamp at 6:05 a.m. I had hardly gotten inside until he buzzed into the light and began drinking deeply and we began drinking in his beauty once more. I was a bit later than normal in putting out his feeder because I did not sleep well last night after being publicly charged with misleading people about the way to care for winter hummingbirds. We are deeply discouraged that the birding elite seem determined to embarrass us with public postings about matters that should and could have been privately addressed and would not have even been necessary if they had obtained all the facts before posting. And what motivation is there for posting private communication on a public forum like this as was done this morning ? We're not so dumb - I have 20 years of formal education - that we haven't been aware of the little "digs" from the elite that our postings are not deep or serious enough and take up too much space on tn-bird. But we've tried to share about Willie the observations we think you would have had, and the questions we think you would have asked, and the emotions we think you would have felt if he had been at your feeder these 85 days. Thanks to the dozens of you who have written to encourage us to continue and we will. Willie is well and so are we and we're going to continue making decisions about him that we feel are best for him. If you don't agree with what we're doing, please have the decency to reply offline to educate us, not online to humiliate us. AND LET'S PLEASE DECLARE THIS MATTER CLOSED AND NOT FLOOD TN-BIRD WITH PRO AND CON POSTINGS WHICH WILL DO NOTHING TO CHANGE MINDS BUT WILL ONLY INFLAME EMOTIONS. What a shame it would be if a beautiful little hummer became the reason for us acting ugly.
